Band profile
Led by Julie Dunn on Vocals/Piano & Percussion
Born……..in London, now living in SW England…has been singing & performing publicly from an early age & thrives on the exciting dynamic of a responsive live situation, engaging warmly with her audiences wherever she appears….
Pursuing……her love of music brought about the completion of several degrees (BAHons/MA/LTCL) with specializations in Music Theatre, Performance, and Jazz Improvisation and the Vocalist –the latter culminating in a substantial recital encompassing many of the great songs made famous by the Ladies of Jazz & supported by her own band, “First Circle”…(later re-named “Strange but True”)…in addition, whilst researching Jazz Improvisation & the Vocalist, Julie studied briefly with noted Jazz singer/educator Louise Gibbs, honing valuable skills in the art of scat singing & harmonic flexibility…
Membership…of JSN (Jazz singers’ network) back in the ‘90s led to workshops with American Jazz vocal giants Mark Murphy and Marion Montgomery and a slot at the 606 club, Chelsea….
Heavily influenced….by an eclectic background in World music -in particular, the vibrancy of Latin American dance rhythms & Afro-Caribbean jazz/blues’ roots –combined with the work of quirky lyricists such as Mose Allison, Dave Frishberg and Cole-Porter, Julie’s performing style embraces the lyrical melodies of the enduring jazz standards repertoire as well as seeking to break new ground with dynamic yet sensitive original compositions, a number of which can be found on her debut CD “Strange but True”
Reviews
Jazzwise review of What’s it All About album recorded with John Horler/Tony Coe/Winston Clifford & others..
“This third album from vocalist Julie Dunn essentially picks up where her polished second album What’s It All About (2007) left off. Presenting a 12-track collection of (mostly) standards, it finds the singer at the top of her game, investing everything she sings with subtle shadings and heartfelt lyricism.”
“… a beautifully appealing sound” – Norma Winstone
“… whether she’s singing familiar standards in a fresh, individual way or addressing original blues, Julie Dunn is a class act – warm, compelling, with an intelligent attitude to lyrics!” – Chris Parker, vortex
“… but above all I loved Julie’s relaxed, understated vocals which recall those vocal giants of my childhood yet caricature none of them – a top rate singer!” – Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms
“… not only a smooth jazz vocalist and pianist, Julie Dunn is also an accomplished songwriter” – Brendan McCusker (JD Quartet: Jazz by the Sea Festival)
Ian Ellis on Sax
Ian Ellis has worked as a professional jazz saxophonist since 1985 and has performed live and recorded with stars such as Ruby Turner, Victoria Newton, Artoro Sandoval, and Rumer. Jazz Wise Magazine has hailed him as a “virtuoso saxophonist, one of our very best”.
Oscar tabor on Violin
“I am a classically trained Violinist, who now plays a wide variety of genres. Whilst studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, I had a fantastic teacher who inspired in me an acute interest in many other genres of music, including Klezmer, Tango, Gypsy Jazz and Folk. Playing the Violin is both my job and my passion, and I love to perform!”
Sagat Guirey on Guitar
“I have been playing guitar for over 30 years and teaching for 20+ years. Banjo and Mandolin have always been part of the mix along with bass guitar, Cuban tres, ukelele, anything with strings and frets, as well as computers and composition. I have played in many bands with lots of different styles – jazz, rock, funk, bluegrass, gypsy, Django jazz, some detuned modern prog type metal.
I was classically trained in London, then later attended the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angles, specialising in jazz guitar, composition and arranging. I was lucky enough to have private lessons with the great Ted Greene and Phil Upchurch. More recently I studied gypsy jazz with Lollo Meier in The Netherlands. And also with Sheryl Bailey and Jonathan Kreisberg. I have composed music for film, TV and commercials and have worked with many artists Nigel Kennedy and Robert Trujillo.”
